New Year Thoughts for the Business Leader

There is always room for improvement no matter how many goals we accomplish.  In many cases, the problem is that regardless of what the organization does, the problems seem to keep recurring.

We need to accept that failure is how we learn. We can grow and improve if we embrace it. Once we avoid it, we limit and stunt ourselves.

As Brad Smith, President & CEO of Intuit said, “Fall in love with the problem, not the solution”.

The first thing to do is to understand the issue.  Making generalizations is risky, and problems can have many causes. When the same problem seems to crop up repeatedly, the problem is one of complacent implementation.  We need to have an understanding of standards and what it means to “measure up”.

Business leaders should be empathetic with stakeholders.  Leaders need to demonstrate that they care about and understand what others think and feel. When people believe you understand their needs, wants, situation and issues, they tend to open up, trust and share more.

Be useful. Do not wait for someone ask for your help.   Do more than what is expected, or do the hard part.  It is one of the single largest ways to differentiate “you” from everyone else at work.

Practice humility.  Value the client.  Show acceptance

The world is changing around us.  We need to innovate to be better, to be relevant and to be competitive.
